THE 2025 OUT100: BRANDAN ROBERTSON

Author, activist, and theologian Rev. Brandan Robertson dedicates each day to combating “the rising influence of far right, anti-queer Christianity by advocating for a radically inclusive and just vision of faith where everyone belongs.”

Robertson, the pastor of Sunnyside Reformed Church in New York City, uses social media and public speaking to inform people about queer inclusive Christianity. He’s also authored 10 books — most recently, Queer & Christian: Reclaiming the Bible, Our Faith, and Our Place at the Table.

His personal struggles with religion as a gay man led him to his current path, he says. “Raised in an evangelical world, I was told my gay identity would cut me off from God forever.”

After coming out, Robertson went through conversion therapy and experienced isolating discrimination in his community. “But in that loss, I found a new home among progressive, inclusive Christians who welcomed me and helped me heal from religious trauma,” he says. “Their courage inspired me to devote my life to ensuring no other LGBTQ+ person has to feel isolated, ashamed, or condemned by toxic religion.” @brandanrobertson
