The Four Fold Path To Wholeness

What does it mean to live a whole life? Or a life that's in balance? 

This is a question that I have wrestled with for years, and recently, I discovered a simple, age-old tool to help me begin living my life in a rhythm that has lead me to feel healthier, more connected, and more alive than ever before. 

What is this magical equation for happiness, you ask?

Now, I'm certain you've seen some variation of this chart or this method somewhere along your journey. But for me, after spending nearly a decade reading, studying, and interviewing some of the healthiest and happiest people in the world, this is what I've come up with. 

Every day, I try to find one exercise that falls into each one of these categories. 

  • I find something that expands my thinking or supports my psychological wellbeing. (mind)
  • I do something that engages my body in growth and strengthening. (body)
  • I find a practice that helps me tap into my True Self and live a grounded existence. (spirit)
  • I seek an opportunity to give of my time, energy, or resources to help another. (service)

If you think about it, doing these four things is actually really easy to do, and doesn't require much extra time on your part. These are rhythms that you can easily incorporate into the pace of your current life, and the more you do them, the more they will become a natural part of how you do life. 

When we engage in mind, body, spirit, and service, we are guaranteed to feel better, look better, and show up better in every arena of our lives. Every spiritual teacher, medical expert, psychotherapist, and philanthropist would tell you the same thing. If you want to live a life full of energy and meaning, engage every aspect of who you are as a person. It's that simple. 

So I encourage you to try this out. Print out that chart and tape it to your mirror. Screenshot it and use it as a background on your phone. Be reminded every day to do something that engages all four of these quadrants for a month and see just how much better your life feels.
