NOTE: Revangelical was a movement founded by Brandan Robertson in 2012. While he no longer personally identifies with this movement, he recognizes its value to many people who are leaving the evangelical fold. For that reason, this information has been left online.

WHAT IS REVANGELICAL?

THE REVANGELICAL MOVEMENT IS A GLOBAL MOVEMENT OF MILLENNIAL EVANGELICALS SEEKING TO RETHINK, REFORM, AND RENEW THEIR FAITH.

The word "Revangelical" was created by Brandan Robertson in 2010 in the midst of his time at Moody Bible Institute, one of the worlds leading evangelical academic institutions. While at Moody, Brandan began to be convicted about the state of Evangelical Christianity, which had become entrenched in political, theological, and cultural ideologies that seemed to distort the true Gospel of Jesus. Brandan began blogging under the name "Revangelical" and soon noticed that his discontentment was part of a larger generational movement among millennial evangelicals to rethink, reform, and renew what it looks like to be an evangelical in our post-Christian, pluralistic world.

As Brandan continued blogging about this growing reformation and consulting with leading evangelicals and fellow millennials, he developed the "Five Marks of Millennial Faith" which have become the standard definition for the Revangelical movement.

  1.  Experiential
o   Reliant upon an encounter with God rather than a set of doctrines and beliefs. (Western World: Mysticism, Global South: Charismatic)
  2.  Active
o   Justice work and activism are integral parts of the practice of faith.  (Neo-Monastic Communities, Community Outreach vs. Mission Trips, Social Justice as the heart of the faith.)
  3.   Rooted
o   Committed to tradition, ritual, and communal narratives to help give a sense of lineage and identity within a broader spiritual movement. (Liturgical Practices and Rituals, Apostolic Confessions, Patristics)
  4.   Diverse
o   Value communities where diverse beliefs, expressions, and people are welcomed, affirmed, and celebrated.(Multigenerational, Multicultural, Multidenominational, Interspiritual)
  5. Communal

o   Generally opposed to institutionalized religion, reliant on communal, grassroots communities of faith. (Dinner groups,
               missional communities, church plants)

As the movement continues to grow worldwide, Brandan continues to contribute regularly through is blog Revangelical hosted on the Patheos Evangelical Channel, The Revangelical Global Cohort- a social media collective of millennial evangelicals who connect and collaborate, his book writing, and The RISE Network- a project of Faith In Public Life that helps to uplift and promote the new face of evangelicalism.
